「點名」是上大學後常會聽到的詞，但是要怎麼用英文表達呢？

「點名」的英文說法就是roll call

首先看到這個片語的英文定義：

the act of saying each of the names on a list to find out who is present

roll這個詞當名詞時有「捲軸」的意思，而用roll call這個片語，引申為「唸出清單上的名字」，看看誰在場，也就是點名的意思啦。

我們可以用roll call造出這樣的句子：

The professor did the roll call at the end of the class today.

「今天教授在課堂結束時點名了。」

搭配的動詞可以用do或take，do/take the roll call，還可以用make。又如：

Tom turned up missing at the roll call.

「Tom在點名時不見了。」

另外，要特別注意的是，「點名」不可以說成call someone names，例如：

They called him names and he cried.

call someone names指的是「罵人」、「咒罵」，

因此這一句的意思是：「他們罵他，然後他哭了。」

從中文看可能以為意思差不多，但是在英文裡可是相差甚遠。

「點名」的英文是roll call，千萬別用錯囉！
